The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has announced the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.
He made the announcement at a televised press briefing on Sunday.
“The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force otherwise known as SARS is hereby dissolved across all the 36 states police command and the Federal Capital Territory with immediate effect,” he said.
Adamu noted that investigation would be conducted into the activities of SARS with the collaboration of civil society organisations (CSOs) while identified culprits within the force would be punished.
The police chief added that all SARS operatives would be redeployed to other commands, formations, and units.
The dissolution of the notorious police unit followed days of protests by Nigerians and even foreigners.
The unit was accused of harassing, brutalising, and even killing Nigerians.
