Akinwumi Adesina Returned As AfDB President

Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has been reaffirmed as President of the bank.

Adesina’s reaffirmation was announced in a tweet by Presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie.

Adesina was re-affirmed in a virtual annual General meeting on Thursday morning.

In a speech at the AfDB’s annual meetings, Adesina requested a second term as president, declaring that he was “doing it with an acute sense of duty and commitment.”

“I do it to serve Africa and our bank, in an unbiased way, to the best of the abilities that God has given me,” he said, according to a statement released by the bank.

He recently held off an influence of the United States after coming out clean from investigations of allegations against his name.

Adesina gained widespread recognition across the continent in October 2019 after he helped the bank secure $115 billion (105 billion euros) in funding pledges, a move that doubled its capital and cemented its triple-A credit rating.

The number of shareholders in AfDB has increased to 81, with 54 African countries and others from Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Adesina is re-elected for another term of 5 years.
