JUST IN: Bayelsa APC heads to appeal court, insists on participation in election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has insisted that regardless of a court’s ruling nullifying its governorship primaries, it would participate in the election slated for November 16.

A Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa had ruled on Thursday that the APC governorship primaries held on September 4 was null and void as it was conducted arbitrarily outside the rules of the party.

The court consequently nullified the nomination of David Lyon as APC’s candidate in a suit filed by Heineken Lokpobiri, one of the aspirants that sought the party’s ticket.

In reaction, chairman of Bayelsa APC chapter, Jothan Amos, said that the party was optimistic about overcoming the setback before Saturday’s poll.

Mr Amos added that the party had set in motion the legal process of appeal and was in the process of obtaining a stay of execution pending the determination of the appeal.

He assured party followers that the party was seeking judicial review of the judgment and urged them to remain calm.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Abuja had on Tuesday disqualified APC’s deputy governorship candidate for the election in Bayelsa, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, from participating in the election.

Mr Degi-Eremienyo was disqualified on grounds that he provided conflicting information on the documents he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APC has filed an appeal against the disqualification.
